'La Croix' has notable purity which is expressed in its freshness and intense flavours of wild raspberry, gooseberry and blackcurrant. Its acidity is well balanced with supple, velvety tannins, and the finish is long.
Owned by Vincent and Anne Mongeard, Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret is located in the village of Vosne-Romanée. The domaine comprises over 30 hectares of vineyards in 35 Burgundy appellations, ranging from villages-level to Grand Cru. Vincent and Anne practice sustainable viticulture, ‘la lutte raisonnée', with a focus on improving soil health with manure and compost. They also put a lot of thought into choosing the perfect, fine-grain oak barrels for maturation. Oak is carefully selected from Nièvre and Tronçais in Allier, before being cured at the domaine for 18-24 months and assembled into barrels by a local cooper. Each barrel is used for up to five years.
The climate of the Hautes-Côtes is harsher than that of the Côte; the air circulates more freely through the valleys and over the hills, and winter temperatures sometimes fall as low as -15°C. The 'La Croix' site is planted to have good sun exposure to compensate for the effects of the higher altitude. The soils are calcareous and the vines are 30 years old.
Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret is known to produce wines of elegance and intensity. Vincent and Anne's use of new oak ranges from 30-40% for Villages and Premier Crus, up to 100% new oak Grand Crus, depending on the vintage. The Nuits-Saint-Georges ‘Les Plateaux' is hand-harvested from a 0.5-hectare vineyard which borders the villages Premier Cru vineyards. The resulting wine is elegant and precise, with bright red cherry fruit flavours, violets and sweet spice lingering on the finish.
